All this time, while we have been writing about synthetic engine oils for cars with higher cubic centimeter displacement, we “kinda’” skipped around the little league. Personally, we have no qualm against ATV and sports bike owners; it’s just that our typical day is flooded with queries related to car engines.
Recently we received a significant amount of requests for engine oil recommendations centered around 500 CC – 600 CC machines. Think about ATVs and heavy bikes in that bracket. We know for a fact that there is a boatload of riders from both aforementioned categories; the only problem is that these users normally engage in conversations at different forums.
Admittedly, there is no “professional” or “influencer” level support at those forums. At the end of the day, it’s just one ATV owner sharing his opinion with another ATV owner. Likewise, it is not necessary for an engine oil brand to work the same way for you, if your biker buddy has is hooked on to one specific product for maybe like an eternity… or whatever.
What’s the Hype about Polaris Synthetic Engine Oil?
Polaris has been manufacturing synthetic engine oil specifically for ATVs for well over 10 years now. If you are into All-Terrain Vehicles or sports bikes centered on 500CC to 600 CC engines, Polaris Synthetic Oil is worth pouring.
On the same note, it will be a hard decision to make. Especially if you are already using track approved Mobil and Shell engine oil for ATVs and bikes, switching to Polaris on impulse is not something we’d recommend. However, we are going to look at some of the ground facts, user opinions and general requirements of 500 trim vehicles.
High-Quality Engine Oil:
Oh yeah, since every other company claims to engineer high-quality synthetic engine oil, Polaris is marching the same charade parade on the outside. Technically speaking, their Premium 4 Synthetic 0W40 is perfect for 4 stroke engines.
The film strength is flexible; it is not too high like Royal Purple Synthetic Engine Oil, and not too low. You will be getting a smooth blend of high resistance engine oil in the long run. If you are using a 0W40 or a 0W50 variant of Polaris Synthetic Engine Oil, you should be in good hands.
Since it is an ATV oriented product, you can relentlessly use the engine oil during the extreme winter season. Think of self-starting your dune buggy or sports bike in one go if the temperature range is anywhere between -40°F to 120°F. Rest assured, the metal on metal contact is kept to a bare minimum while setting aside heat spikes as a result of high RPM input.
Word of Advice for Beginners:
Be extremely careful if you are going to be using Polaris Synthetic Engine Oil in your ATV or sports bike for the first time. For some reason, Polaris Co. strongly advises against mixing engine oil brands for “enhanced” performance because their company formula is totally different. It doesn’t blend in well with other oil variants that you are probably thinking of mixing Polaris with.
Likewise, if this is your first time switching to Polaris synthetic engine oil, you should consult with a specialist. Normally we recommend draining some percentage of old engine oil to use with a totally new brand, but this isn’t the case with Polaris. A slow transition phase might leave marks on the dipsticks, other than rendering the engine inoperable in the near future.
Filling the Holes:
Regardless of whatever expressive demeanor you may have gathered from “filling holes” phrase, we are referring to the transmission oil brand here. Polaris recommends that you should be using their AGL Synthetic Gearcase lubricant as a matching brand for your Polaris synthetic engine oil.
The gear oil will work as a catalyst to help derive maximum performance mile after mile, without taking a toll on the HP. The company also recommends using its engine oil as a lubricant for chain and any other moving parts with metal-on-metal contact mechanism.
The last bit of recommendation does seem a little farfetched. We’d rather suggest using a reliable lubricant if you are not looking to buy the AGL synthetic oil for that matter. The only thing that matters is regular transmission oil change after 25 hours of driving/ riding or an equivalent 250 miles. Whichever comes first, make sure you are changing your transmission oil for maximum performance.
Don’t Forget the Maintenance Factor!
By the way, it doesn’t matter if you are using Polaris Synthetic Engine Oil or any other brand for that matter, as long as you are not taking care of your car, engine oil won’t do squat. Period. Think of it this way: high-quality engine oil is just one cog in the machine, other cogs need to work their level best as well.
For instance, transmission oil is a contributive factor to engine oil. They both go hand-in-hand, so take as much care of transmission as you dote on the engine. Likewise, keep general lubrication checks in perspective. Find out all that you can about pivots, cables, general engine parts with the moving mechanism, etc.
Do a local inspection after every 3 months. We are not just talking about taking out the dipstick to check oil level; think about going over all the parts that were mentioned earlier. You will eventually learn that the “maximum performance” bracket is only achievable after all other factors are in perfect harmony.
What Else is to Know about Polaris Synthetic Engine Oil?
If you are unsure of switching between your current engine oil and Polaris synthetic engine oil, you should check whether Polaris Co. if offering a warranty. If there’s a warranty, you can at least “try” the engine oil to see if it is something worth sticking with.
Generally, a lot could go wrong with any synthetic engine oil if you are in the viscosity ballpark. Sometimes the error is so minute, but you are somehow degrading engine performance until it is too late. In this context, make sure you are not voiding Polaris’ synthetic engine oil warranty; they have a bunch of rules for new users to follow.
